Dr. F. Scott Spencer
Interim Senior Pastor
A graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio (BA), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MDiv), Westminster Theological Seminary (ThM), and the University of Durham, England (PhD), F. Scott Spencer has served as Professor of New Testament and Biblical Interpretation at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond and Professor of Religion at Wingate University in North Carolina.
He is married to Dr. Janet Spencer, who has taught English at Wingate University and is retiring this year from the Maggie Walker Governor’s School in Richmond. They have two adult daughters, Lauren and Meredith (and an Irish Doodle named Seamus!).
Dr. Spencer has published numerous books, articles and reviews, especially pertaining to his interests in Jesus and the Gospels, the book of Acts, and the role of women in the New Testament and early church. His most recent book is a full-scale commentary on Luke’s Gospel. He is currently completing a manuscript on Passions of the Christ: The Emotional Life of Jesus.
Dr. Spencer regularly teaches and preaches in area churches and has served interim pastorates in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Texas. He has also enjoyed acting in university, seminary, and community theater productions, including roles in Shadowlands, God’s Favorite, Cotton Patch Gospel, and Godspell for The BTSR Shoestring Players.
